In 1846 Martha Barnum filed to receive the pension of her husband Thomas Barnum (deceased), the original certificate having been lost. Thomas, who was a sergeant in the Revolution, had been entitled to a pension of $120 per year. Martha presented proof of marriage and testimony from contemporaries of Thomas and was granted his pension.
A statement by one of Thomas Barnum's children concerning his pension request mentions her, stating that "her name was Martha Nigus, a maid but was the widow Berry when Father married her". Also, in one of Polly Barnum Squire's letters she refers to Martha as "Patty Berry".
