Notes for Sarah Jane DODGE

From the North Adams Transcript, Massachusetts, Tuesday, December 14, 1897: Mrs. Sarah J. Barnum, aged 67 years, died suddenly at her home on Pearl Street Monday (December 13) morning. She arose early in the morning and after breakfast was getting ready to do her washing. She had placed a boiler on the stove and went up stairs. Her husband, James Barnum was about to go to work and was going out of the house when he turned to get a handkerchief. His son told him he guessed Mrs. Barnum was sick. Mr. Barnum went upstairs and found his wife lying on the bed. She was gasping for breath and died in a few minutes. Death was caused by heart disease. She was born in Pittsfield and was married to Mr. Barnum about 31 years ago in Lebanon. The family had resided in town ever since. Mrs. Barnum was a woman of good Christian character, a kind mother and dutiful wife and her untimely death is a source of grief to her many friends. She leaves besides her husband, five children, Charles, Ernest and William, and Mrs. James Ferguson of this town and Mrs. Howard McAllister of Cheshire, one sister, Mrs. Gus Partridge of this town and a brother, George Dodge of Maple Grove. The funeral will be held from St. Mark's church Wednesday afternoon.
