A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
The New York Times, February 20, 1908. War Widow of 1812 Dead. Mrs. Barnum Live Nearly a Century—Husband of P. T. Barnum's Cousin.
Mrs. Elizabeth Barnum, one of the few surviving widows of veterans of the War of 1812, died yesterday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Daniel D. Walton, in East Orange, N. J., aged 96. She was in good health until two weeks ago, when she was stricken with paralysis.
Mrs. Barnum was born in Monckton, Vt., a daughter of the late Aaron Barton. The family was prominent in Colonial days, and took an active part in the struggle for freedom. The family were Quakers, and throughout her long life Mrs. Barnum remained an active member of that sect.
Her husband, Enoch Barnum of Franklin, Vt., was a cousin of Phineas T. Barnum of circus fame. [N.B., fourth cousin]. He was a mere boy when the second war with England broke out, and ran away from home to join a Vermont regiment. He died several years ago.
Mrs. Barnum leaves three sons, a daughter, sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. The funeral services on Friday morning will be conducted by her nephew, the Rev. Lindley M. Stevens of Poughkeepsie.
The interment will be in Québec in the Friends' burying ground.
