Leonard "Len" Barnum was a school teacher in Indiana Beach, Indiana. He also played professionally for two teams in the National Football League (NFL); New York Giants (1938-1940) and Philadelphia Eagles (1940-1942).

From the News Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Indiana, November 25, 1998: Leonard W. Barnum, 86, of Columbia City, a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Oaks Living Care Center. The Parkersburg, W.Va., native was a professional football player for five years with the New York Giants and then the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1974, he earned a place in the West Virginia Football Hall of Fame. He also coached both football and basketball at West Virginia University and football at Marietta College. He was a member of the Columbia City Kiwanis Club, Free & Accepted Masons and the City Council of Columbia City. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Surviving are his wife, Helen E.; sons Charles of Kendallville and Stephen of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; a daughter, Pamela "Pam" Cornell of Monticello; a sister, Hazel Gustke of Wayzara, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Eugene; sisters Ethel Schlatzhauer, Evelyn Brock, Mildred Webster and Geri Gordon. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
