Family tradition suggests that Daniel M. Barnum was half Indian. According to Arkansas Land Records, he received a parcel of land on 18 Oct 1890. The US Census for 1870 shows him living in Giles Township, Van Buren County, Arkansas; in 1880 and 1890, he is shown in Red River Township, the same county and state. He was a farmer in Van Buren County from the 1860s until his death. Strangely, he gave his place of birth as Canada in the 1870 and 1900 US Census records, but as Missouri in the 1880 Census. He also gave several stories, at different times, concerning his arrival in Arkansas: 1) He came from Canada to Arkansas on a raft. He liked the Little Red River area of Arkansas because it reminded him of home, so he stayed; 2) He said his parents had died and his brothers had a sheep ranch and a store in Kansas. One day, his brothers sent him out to check on the shepherds, although he wanted to stay in the store. Angry and upset, he met a man on the road who asked him what was the matter. The man offered to take him along on a trip and he went - although he was only 12 years old. He lived in Missouri for some time, he said, before coming to Arkansas at the age of 21 and marrying his first wife; 3) His father and mother and their six children went from Canada to Kansas in a covered wagon. He went alone to Missouri, where he lived until moving to Kansas; 4) His parents had died and somehow he was responsible for his brother breaking a leg. He was sent to bring the doctor but just kept going and never returned.
