Notes for George Campbell BARNUM


Summarized from an obituary in the Courier Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, January 25, 2013: George Campbell Barnum, 86, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, surrounded by loving family.
George was born May 9, 1926 in Mount Vernon, NY, the son of Marjorie and Robert Barnum. Raised in Riverside, CT with his twin brother, Ed, and older brother, Bob, he attended Trinity College in nearby Hartford.
During World War II he trained as a pilot and officer in the Navy and was honorably discharged as ensign when the war ended. George joined the American Express Company in New York City and moved to open an office in Louisville. He held various banking and trust positions before joining Tafel Electric and Supply Co., where he served as chief financial officer and secretary until retirement.
After meeting the love of his life, Mary Doherty Tafel, the couple married on Halloween in 1953. Their strong union, blessed with six children, continued for 59 years. George's family was his greatest joy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Doherty Tafel Barnum; brother, Robert Clinton Barnum (Joan); children, Mary Elizabeth Hicks (David), Marjorie Schubert (Allen), Mary Colgin (Andrew), George Campbell Barnum Jr. (Laura), Karen Dentinger; grandchildren, John Richard Zampolin Jr., George Allen Schubert, Peter Garr Schubert, Charles Tafel Schubert, Doherty Colgin Riebesell (Ryan), Phillip Mason Colgin, Joseph O'Keefe Barnum, Baylor Lawrence Barnum, Brooks Tafel Barnum, Taylor Dentinger Jessie (Jacob), Evelyn Barnum Dentinger and Theodore Baker Dentinger; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn June Jessie.
He is preceded in death by his twin brother, Edward Marvin Barnum (Rena); daughter, Laura Tafel Barnum; and grandchildren, Samuel Crain Schubert and Allen August Dentinger. Memorial service was held on Saturday January 26, 2013 at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church.
