Notes for Carolyn ROGERS

Sadly, three of David and Sarah Rogers' children are buried with them.
We have no record of what caused the deaths of Cornelia or Medad, or
of the effect on the family. However, when Emma died, her sister
Carolyn had started a diary and on several occasions mentioned "our
darling Emma." Emma died on Christmas Day, of scarlet fever. On 1 Jan
1861, Carolyn wrote "One week tonight since dear little Emma left us
for the Happy Land of which she loved to sing. O! Blessed, happy child
to find the God of Heaven so near and kind." On 22 January, she wrote
"Staid at home and assisted mother about washing. Dear little Emma
used to love to play in the water." Probably the saddest entry that
she made, and the one showing how profoundly Emma's death had affected
her, was on 9 February when she wrote "Attended school. I can see from
my window dear Emma's grave." Some children could look beyond the
window and daydream. Carolyn, however, was reminded of how harsh
childhood could be.
