A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
During the French Régime, nearly 25 immigrants bearing the family name Morin appeared in the Canadian Registers. If we include François Morand, a great many of whose descendants changed the spelling of the family name to Morin, 16 of these immigrants settled in America. Among them, four were originally from Poitou, two were from l'Aunis, two were from Brittany, one from D'Anjou, one from Normandy, one from Brie and one from Lorraine, while four were of unknown origin.
Marie Adélaïde Morin changed her name, when she moved from Canada the US, to Mary Adelaide Moran. According to family history Mary Adelaide spoke only French. In the 1880 census for Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska her brother's last name is shown as Maren. On her son Louis Octave Barnum's death certificate it is listed as Moran. On the birth records of her daughter Elisa Marie in Canada her last name is Morin. The 1880 cenus lists her age as 41 and shows her born in Canada. In the 1900 census for Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, she was living with her son Louis Octave Barnum at 1823 North 23rd Street and was a widow, month of birth given as July. She is also listed as having 5 children with three still living in 1900.
Another source shows her birth as occurring in Sherbrooke County.
Her godfather was Narcisse Rivard and her godmother Mary Morin.
She was buried in Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery, next to her husband Jehiel.
