Notes for Rebecca BARNUM

According to descendant Carolyn Stone, the exact date of Rebecca Barnum's death was 20 Oct 1827. She died by drowning at Long Point, Canada aboard a ship in the wreck of the schooner "Anne" during a gale on a return trip to Vermilion from Buffalo. Her son, Charles Palmer Judson married Louisa Allen. Louisa's brother, Levi Allen, was the master of the schooner. He died in 1893 and his brother, Archibald Allen, died several years later.

The following was taken from TheShipsList (www.theshipslist.com/index.html) maintained by S. Swiggum and M. Kohli: Ship Arrivals at the Port of Québec, 1827. The following information on arrivals, due to the condition of the papers, has been taken from various sources including the Montreal Gazette [MG], the United Empire Loyalist [UEL] and the Canadian Courant & Montreal Advertiser [CC]. Oct 1827 - Unfortunate Shipwreck on Lake Erie:— The schooner Ann, Captain Allan [sic], of Sandusky, left Buffalo on the 20th ult., bound for Sandusky with nine Passengers, and a Crew of five men.— cargo salt and baggage. Owing to the severity of the gale, she was driven on to Long Point, about 10 o'clock the same night, when she bilged instantly, scarcely having time for the passengers to get up on deck; all however reached the deck except an old lady. After reaching the deck, the sea broke over the vessel with such violence, that three men, three women and a child were washed over. The crew and one passenger clung to the wreck until morning, when they were taken off. The names of the passengers lost are, Rowland, and Mila Pettis and their wives and child, Charles Putin and an elderly lady, name unknown, lived in Ohio. During the gale the vessel and cargo were entirely lost.

Captain Allen died in 1893
