According to his Find A Grave entry, Artimus grew up in Sherman County, left and went to business college in Portland, but returned to be a stock rancher in Grass Valley Canyon. He brought the first purebred Herford cattle into Sherman County and was instrumental in starting the Sherman County Fair. He also raised and trained race horses.

From The News-Review (Roseburg, Oregon), 2 July 1948: Veteran Cattleman of Eastern Oregon Dies. Moro, Ore., July 2 -AssociatedPress [logo] - Art H. Barnum, 70, Veteran Sherman County cattleman who developed the first Herford show string in this area died Tuesday of a long-standing heart ailment. He was an original member of the Sherman County Fair Board and served on the board 30 years.
The widow, Maggie, three sons, Henry Barnum of Moro, Orville Barnum of Portland, and Ted Barnum of Portland survive.
