Notes for Benjamin EWING

Elizabeth Ewing Fox wrote, in April of 2006: "I grew up in the family homestead of Benjamin's brother Daniel Sullivan Ewing -- a large Federal house where nothing was ever thrown away! I have letters, diaries, deeds, etc some which date back to 1795.

Sources: (1) Family Bible belonging to Daniel which was taken to Wisconsin by Daniel's grandson, Daniel Sullivan II in 1886. My great Aunt Stella Dyer Ewing made a handwritten copy of the Bible entries which is in the possession of my sister, Joyce McGinnis. An entry in Stella's diary for April 16, 1886 says," Uncle Daniel left today taking the Bible with him". One of the Bible pages was titled "Deaths Brothers and Sisters of Daniel S. Ewing. The list is: James Ewing, Jr born in Pittsford, Vt. Died in Canada April 20, 1832. Aged 52 yrs.; Hannah Barnum born in Pittsford, Vt. Died in Canada June 22, 1845. Aged 54 yrs.; Polly Irish died in Canada May19, 1850. Aged 73 yrs.; Benjamin Ewing born in Greenwich Mass.died Oct. 31, 1852, Aged 76 yrs.; Margaret Mariah Ewing born in Rutland, Vt. Died in Canada Aug 1,1855 aged 54 years of age. 2) Diary/notebook of Daniel's: Father died Sept 4, 1828. aged 74 yrs. Mother died May 4, 1841. Both parents, James and Naomi died in Canada) 3) Extracted from the "1878 Illustrated Historical Atlas of Durham and Northumberland Counties of Ontario"; published by H. Belden & Co., Toronto." Eliakim Barnum, also from Vermont, settled in Haldimand at the close of the last century. He married a sister of old Benjamin Ewing. ....." 4) I have a letter written by Daniel to his son Julius A.C. Ewing May 4, 1849 from Rochester, NY where he is visiting his sister Clarissa (Ewing) (Powers) Buel. He is leaving the next day for Buffalo "to meet Brother Ben". (Benjamin lives over the border in Ontario and Daniel has traveled all the way from Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont). 5) LDS -- enter his son's name, Benjamin Franklin Ewing and you will get to Benjamin James Ewing. 6) History of Pittsford, Vermont by A.M. Caverley; pub Tuttle, Co., Rutland, Vermont 1872; page 701."

"There is so much misinformation floating around out "there". Clan Ewing tends to use a book published by Margaret Ewing Fife as the final word and she has Benjamin as a brother to his father James, Esq. Benjamin was the first born of Naomi (Cooley) and James Ewing. He was named after his grandfather Benjamin Cooley. Also, as a source, I forgot to mention the 1790 census which lists two males 10-16 yrs: Benjamin who was born 1776 and James (Jamie) born 1780; one male age to 10 yrs: Daniel S. born 1787; and one male 26-45 yrs: James, Esq born 1754.

"The 1800 census: Benjamin (aged 24 yr) was in his own household with one son, 2 yr. who is Benjamin Franklin; Females - one aged 16-26 - his wife Eunice (Doolittle).

"These censuses were for Pittsford, Rutland, Vermont."
