In 1900 US Census for District 349, Chicago Ward 12, Cook County, Illinois Sam, 22, was living with his parents and working as a laborer.

In the 1910 US Census for District 895, Chicago Ward 20, Cook County, Illinois Samuel, 32, was married and working as a photo engraver. He and his wife were living with his mother-in-law and three of her children (including his wife).

In the 1920 US Census for District 164, Oak Park Precinct 17, Cook County, Illinois Sam Barnum, 42, was working as a photo engraver and correspondent and he and his wife were still living with his mother-in-law and two of her adult children.

In the 1930 US Census for District 2278, Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois Samuel Barnum, 52, was working as a photo engraver and commercial photographer and he and his wife, May, were still living with May's mother and her younger sister Ella.
