Notes for Marjory Ruth BARNUM


From the Binghamton Press & Sun, Binghamton, New York, November 18, 2014: Marjory Barnum Hinman of Windsor, NY, went to be with her Lord, on November 15, 2014, after several years of deteriorating health. She was 87 years old when God called her home. She was born in Johnson City, NY, on September 5, 1927, and grew up in Oakdale with her parents and three sisters. She married Grayson Hinman in 1949, and in 1957 they moved to Windsor, NY, where they opened a jewelry store they operated for twenty years. She served as the Windsor High School secretary for 16 years before serving a 4 year term as Deputy Clerk for the Broome County Legislature. Her love of history was well-known in the community as she was the founding president of the Old Onaquaga Historical Society, did much curatorial work at St. Luke's Museum in Harpursville, and was President of the Broome County Historical Society from 1969-1974. She spent over 30 years creating a local history research center at Roberson Center for the Arts now located at the Broome County Public library. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York, Empire State College. She lectured extensively for 35 years, published 11 local history books, and was co-editor on two Windsor books. She served as the Windsor Village Historian for over 20 years. For the American Bi-Centennial, she served on the county commission and was co-chairman for Windsor's Bicentennial celebration. Marjory is predeceased by her parents, Zenus and Alice Barnum; two sisters and their spouses, Laurella (Robert) Christensen and Edyth (Richard) Cook. She is survived by her husband, Grayson; their three children, Jennifer (James) Hoskins, Gary (Carolyn) Hinman and Dorinda (George) Bird. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jason (Katie) Hoskins, Christopher Hinman, Chelsea (Jonathan) Treubig and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Nadia Hoskins. She is also survived by sister, Janet (Jack) Stahl and several nieces and nephews. Services to celebrate Marjory's life will be held at the West Windsor Baptist Church, officiated by son, Gary G. Hinman on 166 North Road, Windsor, NY. Calling hours are from 6-8 PM on Thursday, November 20. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 21.
