Notes for Edward BOLAND

Edward Boland was born abt 1830 in Newstead, Erie, New York. He is listed as male, under 5 in the 1830 census in the family of Asa Boland. Also one female under 5 (name not known) and one female 20 to 30 (daughter of Joshua Sr). Edward lived in Newville, De Kalb county, Indiana with his wife Almeda in the 1860 census. He died (possibly murdered) on 12 July 1868 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Newville. The tombstone inscription gives his age at death as 39 years, 5 months, 27 days. Edward and his wife had no children.

From the Waterloo Press of July 16, 1868: Two Men Drowned. On Sunday, the 12th inst., Mr. Boland and a young man named Wellington Coburn, of Newville, Ind., were drowned in the Saint Joseph River, above Webster's Mill, at the Ohio State line, while bathing. From indications of bruises found on the boy, it is suspected there was foul play. It is also reported that Mr. Boland had $150 in his possession, which cannot now be found. Both men were reputed to be good swimmers; and Mr. Boland was a very tall man, who could have waded the river at the spot where his body was found.
