Notes for William TAIT

William Tait was born in Ireland and later moved to Scotland, where he married Mary Priday and they had a son, George Priday Tait. George died and Mary died soon after. William, in his grief, joined the British East India Company and went to India. There he met Elizabeth Xavier, who was teaching in a Catholic School. He later married her and they had two sons, William James Tait (1851-1853) who died of cholera in India, and John Tait (1852-1917). William converted Elizabeth to the LDS church. William and John came to “Zion” around the back way, arriving in San Francisco and then traveling on to Utah. Elizabeth came later, after she gave birth had Mary Ann, traveling to England and then to US. Thence by train to Iowa City, where Mary Ann died of exposure. Elizabeth came on to Utah with the Willie Handcart Company and William was among their rescuers. William and Elizabeth had seven more children, Elizabeth Julianna being their fourth child. They resided in Cedar City until their deaths and are buried there.
