From the New Haven Register, May 4, 2010: William Barnum Gumbart, Jr, 85, husband of 52 years to Elizabeth Cushman Gumbart, of North Haven, passed away on May 2, 2010. He was born in New Haven on June 24, 1924 to the late William and Lucy Finch Gumbart. Along with his wife, William leaves his sons and daughters-in-law, William Gumbart and Susan Cornick of Boulder, CO, Thomas and Carol Gumbart of Stow, MA, Edward and Mary Beth Gumbart of Macon, GA, and David and Susan Bahr-Gumbart of Killingworth; grandchildren, Clara Louise, Spencer Warren, Ryan Clancy, Laurel Adele, and Taylor Suzanne Aurora. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Hall Gumbart. William graduated from the Foote School, Hopkins School, Dartmouth College, and the Rutgers School of Banking. He was a Trust Officer at the First New Haven National Bank and served with the 874th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Co. in England and France during WWII. He was an active board member (often as treasurer) of Travelers Aid, the Institute Library, the Dartmouth Club of New Haven, the Walton Fishing Club, the Mary Wade Home, the Graduate Club, and the North Haven Congregational Church. William especially enjoyed his role as grandfather. Among his favorite activities were fly fishing and fly tying, hiking, and yard work. A Memorial Service will be at the North Haven Congregational Church on Thursday, May 6th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Hillside Cemetery, Monson, MA will be private.
