From The Daily World, Aberdeen, Washington, Tuesday, September 21, 2010: Eugene H. “Gene” Barnum, 92, a longtime South Bend resident died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond. He was born March 2, 1918, in Bismark, N. D. to Henry E. and Blanche H. (Heuck) Barnum.
Gene worked as a police officer at Faulkton, S. D. prior to coming to South Bend in 1951. He was Chief of the South Bend Police Department from 1952 until 1964. Gene was a member of the Raymond Eagles Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Lucille in 1979. He went on and married Elsie Woodard and she later died in 1993. He married Marianne E. Butler in 1996, she survives him at the family home in South Bend.
He is survived by 3 sons, Harold E. of Rochert, Mich., James R. of Centralia and Thomas L. Barnum of South Bend; 2 sisters, Ada Letting of Denver, Col. and Mary Swanson of Raymond. Gene is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 sons, Edward, Warren and John Barnum.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, September 24, 2010, at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Menlo.
