Roy David Barnum was her stepfather; her biological father was Ambrose Eugene Ryan. Her parents separated sometime after 1910 and both remarried. There is a birth certificate for Eureka and she appears in the 1910 census.
She married a Frederick Blatchford Forbes. She was one of the first female Hawaii state representatives (1959-1966) and a state senator (1967-1974). She was also Hawaii mother of year for 1970.
