A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Joseph MCABEE

Joseph McAbee was born on 21 May 1894 in Lawrence, Brown, Wisconsin. There is a certain mystery surrounding the circumstances of his birth. Although the birth certificates for all of his siblings show them as "White," Joseph's birth certificate states that he was "Halfbreed Indian-French". He was born at 1:30 p.m. on the afternoon of May 21, 1894 in the town of Lawrence, Brown County, Wisconsin and the names of his parents are given as "Louis Macabe, Farmer, and Abigal Garity." The child's living siblings are listed on his birth record and, of the seven surviving children in the family, the name of Sophia Elizabeth McAbee is the only one not listed. At the time Joseph McAbee was born, Sophie was 16 years old, while her older sister Genevieve was 22 and had been married for four years. Gertrude was eight years old and Maggie was three. Angeline, Martha, Mary and Ellen had all died as children.
