Notes for Eliakim BARNUM/Hannah EWING

Their marriage certificate, handwritten by Justice of the Peace Joel Hinman, implies the scarcity of ministers at that time. "Whereas Eliakim Barnum and Hannah Blanchard...were desirous of marrying each other and there being no Parson or Minister of the Church of England living within 18 miles..." Their marriage was solemnized on January 7, 1812. Another source says that the ceremony was performed by James Merriman.
