Notes for David Albert BARNUM
Dr. David A. Barnum served as Assistant Surgeon with the 16th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. His wife Catharine received a pension as an Army Widow; Certificate No. 667330.

Barnum, D.A., M.D., was born in the town of Paris, N.Y., April 16, 1845, son of David H. and Narina (Budlong) Barnum. His great-grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. The Barnum family originally came from Connecticut. Dr. Barnum was educated at the common and select schools and Fort Edward Institute. He studied medicine with Dr. Budlong, and was graduated from the Albany Medical College in 1865, having taken his degree before he was of age. He was appointed assistant surgeon to the Sixteenth N.Y. Heavy Artillery, and was in the field with his regiment for six months. Immediately after the war he began the practice of his profession in Cassville, where he has since maintained his office, and has risen to a front rank in his profession. He is a member of the Oneida County Medical Society, The Medical Society of the State of New York, and of the Medical Association of the State of New York. He was supervisor of the town of Paris from 1888 to 1892, and is chairman of the Democratic County Committee, which position he has filled for six years, In 1876 Dr. Barnum married Catharine Rhodes, of Oswego, N.Y., who was the youngest daughter of Benjamin Rhodes, one of the pioneers of the town of Bridgewater, N.Y., where she was born.
