Ambrose Smith was a well-known silk merchant, of Cheapside. Boyd's Inhabitants of London lists him as a citizen and mercer; freed from his apprenticeship in 1553 by John Aire and another person whose name is not recorded.
His will was dated 20 Jun 1584 and proved 23 Jun 1584. It named the following beneficiaries: son Henry, Manor of Withcock, Leicester; brother Roger, land bought of Roger; child Margaret WILKES (wife of Sir Thomas); child Sibil; son William; wife Joan; servant James RAKINS; mother Dorothy POOLE (wife of Sir Henry POOLE, knight of Rhodes); brothers Roger, Francis, Clement, Erasmus, Robert, George; executor Francis; son Francis, residue; daughter Elizabeth CALTHROP, nil; daughter Dorothy BARNHAM, nil.
