Ferne was adopted. Her biological parents were Robert Gould and Harriette Clark. Her adoptive parents were Clinton Hodge, who was born in Kentucky in 1864 and died in Everett, Washington, and Florence B. Frost, who was born in Washington State in 1871 and also died in Everett.
Her ashes were scattered in Lake Tahoe, Clear Lake and the Pacific Ocean.
