She lived in California when she married Edward. In her mother's obituary she is shown as living in Coronado, California. Her grandchildren called her "Nanny".

Mary Ellen Barnum had two children: 1) Mary Jayne (Schock) Welday Lawrence, whose biological father was Edward Schock. Mary Jayne was adopted by Burdette J. Welday a few years after he married Mary Ellen Barnum Schock; 2) Edward Eugene (Schock) Welday was Mary’s second child and took his stepfather’s surname when he was adopted.
