The 25 May 1900 issue of the Times (McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois) states that the Christian Church of the town was organized Feb. 9, 1876 and Ashbell W. Barnum was an officer in 1900.
From the 16 Aug 1923 issue of the Times (McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois). Barnum, Ashbell Willard; born 10 Oct 1865, Port Fulton, Indiana; died 05 Aug 1923 at home in McLeansboro; oldest son of Marion & Harriet (Gwinn) Barnum. Married Ada Glass, Benton, Arkansas, 15 Apr 1876; 8 children, 1 deceased. Leaves wife and 7 children; 3 brothers: Tho. G. of Oklahoma; W. B. of Ridgway & Marvin H. Barnum of Norris City; 1 sister, Mrs. R. L. Boyd of McLeansboro. (another source gives his birth year as 1856; his father's name should read Marvin).
