Notes for John RAE
John Rae (1772-1834) was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and married Margaret Glen (1781-1855) in Edinburgh on 15 April 1804. They moved to Orkney, where John was factor of the Honeyman estate, and afterwards took over the Hudson's Bay Company agency in Stromness. As factor of Sir William Honeywell's estate he lived in relative wealth compared to most people of the time.
John was likely the son of James Rae and Marion Sibbald. Margaret was a daughter of William Glen and Janet Love.
