From The Hawarden Independent, Iowa, September 6, 1972: Mrs. William F. Barnum, age 82, passed away August 29, 1972 at the Mapes Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 1:30 P.M., Friday Sept. 1, 1972 with Rev. Douglas Oelke officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery. She was born Elena Carlson Dec. 23, 1889 at Lacrosse, Wisconsin. She moved to the Hawarden area in 1914. On July, 27 1913 she was married to William F. Barnum at Hawarden. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1957. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Florence) Johnson of Farnhamville, Iowa and one son, William (Bud) Barnum of Hawarden, 6 grandsons and 6 great grandchildren. Casket Bearers were Harry, Malcom, William, Leslie and Charles Kratochvil and Don Dowdey.
